RoboCopera

A few months back, my good friend Hannah and I watched the 2001 MTV movie, “Carmen: A Hip Hopera” starring Beyonce. It was such a fascinating train wreck. My favorite moment was when the character Blaze spells out his name in a song while what sounds like Brandy and Monica’s “The Boy is Mine” plays in the back ground. Here, just see for yourself: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YgjeU6F1WvM

The early 2000’s was a weird time of movie musical creations. The list includes, “Repo: A Genetic Opera”, “Phantom of the Opera”, and “Coyote Ugly”. Anyway, I realize I’m beginning to stray from the intent of the post so let me bring it back around. What if, we took our beloved epic 80’s sci-fi/Horror/Action movies and turned them into opera/musicals. It doesn’t seem too far off from the goals of the early 2000’s except the featured story line would come directly out of 80’s sci-fi films. *dim the house* *Draw the curtain* *lights up on* ROBOCOPERA.

So far all I have is that RoboCop will be played by a baritone who sings when he is Alex Murphy and turns into a robotic speaking role once he transforms into RoboCop (obviously). For once, the leading lady isn’t a damsel in distress, but instead a bad ass cop decked out in swat gear who doesn’t take crap from anyone. Let’s make her a mezzo. In Fact, let’s make her a musical theater role. Boom. Finally, there would be an epic quartet of 2 tenors, a soprano, and RoboCop titled, “Shoot him in the dick”. One of the first scenes to introduce RoboCop and all his bad-assery. Of course we would keep the car chase in, and the bad guys best one liners like, “Bitches leave”. Let’s also not forget the battle between RoboCop and the giant CGI robot that will kill you if you park illegally (because that’s a great way to keep people from committing the smallest of crimes. Just shoot em!)

“Total Recall” is on my to do list for this weekend. I’m hoping to cast Arnold for a role of a lifetime. Stay tuned.
